Getting to Know RD
Our relationship with RD started with a Teams call while he was at his residential school. RD had many questions about who would be looking after him and what their roles were. This call allowed us to understand his preferences and interests, such as his love for Arsenal, evident from his wheelchair straps. Following this, we completed a care plan based on evidence-based information from healthcare professionals, focusing on RD’s clinical needs.
Home Visit and Care Integration
A home visit was planned to get to know RD better, ensuring he was included in his care planning. We discussed how he likes to spend his days and his bedtime routine. Understanding RD’s needs and communication methods was crucial. He wants to feel safe, supported, and understood by his care team, and he gets very anxious when meeting new people.
Building Trust
RD’s safety and comfort are paramount. He has had unfortunate incidents with hoisting in the past, making him nervous. Our team follows strict safety procedures, ensuring RD feels secure during these processes. RD’s unique way of communicating—sticking out his tongue or giving a kiss for ‘yes’ and looking up for ‘no’—is respected and followed by the team.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the challenges is encouraging RD to use his Bi-Pap mask overnight. While medical advice allows for occasional nights without it, we work patiently with him to ensure his comfort. Managing a sporadic rota for weekend and school holiday care also presents challenges, but we remain committed to keeping the team engaged and motivated.
RD’s care environment is influenced by complex family dynamics. Our team supports RD in expressing his emotions and making his own choices, even when these choices differ from his parents’ preferences.
RD’s Your Best Life (YBL) Journey
RD’s YBL journey with Innovate Care Group has been filled with exciting activities. He has enjoyed watching Wycombe Wanderers FC, visiting Hampton Court Palace, London, and Portsmouth, and exploring the local town. RD loves going to the cinema, shopping, or just hanging out with his team.
Recently, RD has rediscovered his love for his hot tub. Despite having spinal rods and awaiting surgery, he now enjoys relaxing in the hot tub, which helps him sleep better. Our team ensured a thorough risk assessment was completed to make this possible.
Looking Ahead
The future holds more adventures for RD. We are planning a tour of the Emirates Stadium, a trip to our London office, and various summer outings. Additionally, we are supporting RD and his mum in planning a trip to Bournemouth.
RD’s journey exemplifies Innovate Care Group’s dedication to providing personalised, empowering care. We strive to create joyful experiences and lasting memories for our clients, ensuring they live their best lives.
