Introduction to Jemima

Jemima’s journey with Innovate began with a thorough assessment and engagement. Jemima, who had a spinal cord injury resulting in tetraplegia, was keen to regain a sense of normalcy and independence despite her significant physical challenges. Innovate’s team worked closely with Jemima and her family to develop a care plan that addressed her complex medical needs while also focusing on her emotional and social well-being.

Jemima’s Story

Jemima had an MRI scan at Queens Hospital, where a fistula in her neck was diagnosed. She underwent surgery for repair, but a rupture during the angiogram caused a blood vessel to bleed into her spine, leading to a spinal cord injury. After spending time in the ITU and undergoing rehabilitation at Stanmore Hospital for eight months, Jemima faced life with tetraplegia. Jemima has a C1 Spinal Cord Injury and tetraplegia. She has no sensation or control of her body below this injury site, making her reliant on carers for all activities of daily living (ADLs). She experiences phantom sensations.

Home Life and Care Integration

Since her injury, Jemima experienced increased anxiety and chose to spend most of her time indoors. Innovate’s Clinical Lead Nurse made it their mission to help Jemima overcome her anxiety. Through long conversations with Jemima and her family, a plan was developed for Jemima to take small steps towards feeling safe and empowered to venture outside.

Jemima is in her mid-fifties and lives at home with her husband, daughter, son, and their cat Winnie. She enjoys watching films, soaps, and daytime television with her live-in carer, who also helps her engage in cooking by following her step-by-step instructions to prepare meals. This involvement in daily activities helps Jemima maintain her role as the lady of the house.

Challenges and Solutions

One major anxiety trigger for Jemima was her home environment. The only exit from the house had a high threshold, causing her to fear shaking her head and having an accident. Innovate facilitated the installation of appropriate ramps to make the exit safe and accessible.

Another challenge was encouraging Jemima to use her Bi-Pap mask overnight. Although medical advice allowed for one night without it, the team worked gently to encourage its use for her well-being.

SL’s Your Best Life (YBL) Journey

With support, Jemima ventured out to her garden in May, enjoying the sunshine and inspecting her vegetable garden. This milestone marked her first day out in four years, and Jemima expressed her gratitude.

Another significant milestone for Jemima was a day trip to the coast, where she enjoyed the amusements with her family. This achievement was a testament to her determination and the support from Innovate. Jemima is now planning a birthday surprise visit for one of her family members.

“I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS DAY, FROM ALL MY HEART! SENDING LOADS OF LOVE YOUR WAY!!!!”

Looking Ahead

Innovate Care Group continues to support Jemima by providing the necessary resources and emotional support to help her achieve her goals. With regular visits and continuous encouragement, Jemima plans to take more trips and engage in activities that bring her joy and fulfilment.

The team is dedicated to ensuring Jemima lives her best life, filled with new experiences and cherished memories.
